Box Score ANGOLA, Ind. - It was a
total team effort for the Trine University volleyball team as they
defeated Adrian College 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 25-20, 25-15). The
Thunder improve to 12-10 on the season and 6-5 in the MIAA.
Trine took the first point of the opening set and
never looked back as Adrian never gained the lead. The Thunder had
several long rallies in the first set, including scoring six of the
final seven points.
The second set was a role reversal for the
Thunder. Adrian took the opening point, as they never allowed Trine
to gain the lead. The Bulldogs led by as much as six points, before
Trine battled back. The Thunder scored five straight points to pull
within two. Trine later trailed by just one, but the Bulldogs
closed out the second set 25-23.
Set number three was the closest of the match as
it saw four lead changes and 11 tie scores. Trine took the early
lead, but Adrian battled back to take a two point lead. The Thunder
fought right back to regain their lead. Once again, the Bulldogs
battled back to take a 12-11 lead but that would be the final time.
The Thunder pulled ahead by three at 17-14. Adrian would try to
mount a comeback but the Thunder were able to squash that as they
rallied off five straight points to extend their lead 23-18.
Freshman Jordan Bell (Coldwater, Mich./Bronson) ended the set with
a big service ace.
The fourth set started as a close battle as both
schools traded early leads. Finally Trine separated themselves on
back-to-back kills by freshman Melanie Troyer (Elkhart,
Ind./Elkhart Memorial). Trine pushed their lead to seven, as they
scored three straight points. From there, the Thunder tallied five
of the final seven points to take the set and the match.
Leading the way for the Thunder was junior Betsy
Irwin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) who had a game-high 19 kills while
adding in a team-high four blocks. Bell had her best night of the
season as she finished with a season-high 12 kills to go along with
eight digs. Troyer also finished the night with double-digit kills
with 11 while adding in seven digs. Fellow freshman Carly Searles
(Levering, Mich./Petoskey) finished her night with 14 digs to go
along with six kills.
Junior Sarah Radekin (Athens, Ohio/Alexander) did
a little bit of everything on the night as she finished with her
team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Radekin led the
offense with a game-high 48 assists while adding in 11 digs, a
game-high three aces, two kills and two blocks. Libero Darcy
Crabtree (Gaston, Ind./Wes-Del) finished her night with a game-high
15 digs.
This was the fourth time this season that three
Trine players have tallied double-digit kills in a match. The match
was Trine's annual Dig For The Cure. This
season's match was dedicated to senior Catie Triplet's
father, Gary, who passed away last July after a long battle with
melanoma. T-shirts were sold before and during the game with all
proceeds being donated to the American Cancer Society.
Trine will take the week off as they next play on
October 18 as they host Albion College for a 6:30 p.m. match.
