The Trine University softball team and head coach Donnie Danklefsen announced the hiring of assistant coach Zech Huston in January of 2025. Huston’s responsibilities will include working with the outfielders and data analytics in addition to serving as the primary pitcher for batting practice.
“Zech is a great addition to our program, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him as a part of the Trine Softball family,” said Danklefsen, “His passion for the game combined with his experience coaching at Division I, with new technologies and as a pitcher will allow him to help the program to improve from multiple angles.”
Huston joins the staff having most recently served as the lead assistant at Webber International University in Florida for the past two seasons. There he was primarily responsible for coaching outfielders, culminating in one of his student-athletes earning All-Conference honors and a marked increase in fielding percentage by the outfield staff.
In his first coaching stop, Huston worked under Kathy Leitke at Western Michigan University as a student assistant and then continued beyond his graduation. Before her retirement Leitke amassed 790 wins over 31 years, with 478 coming during her time at Western. She was a national and conference coach of the year.
Prior to his coaching career, Huston played baseball at Lake Michigan College while earning an associate degree. He graduated from Western with a degree in Sports Management in 2021. Since his graduation he has taken up men’s fastpitch softball where he serves as a pitcher.
