Plymouth, Mich – The Trine University Synchronized Skating Team brought home podium finishes at the 2026 Midwestern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships, extending their streak to four years in a row.
On Friday night, the Open-Collegiate team was the first to take competition ice for Trine, starting off strong with their crowd-entertaining "Western Country" theme. The program was highlighted with strong pivot block, intersection, and traveling elements. Despite a fall in a transition, the Thunder were able to earn positive grades of execution on all of their elements and deliver a season's best score of 46.72. This is the third season in a row Trine has earned the silver medal in the open-collegiate division.
The team will take the ice for the last time this season at the Tri-State Synchronized Skating Competition on Saturday, February 7. That event will take place in Dearborn, Mich.
Trine's Collegiate team was able to make an impressive comeback at the Midwest Sectionals after a disappointing first half of the season, earning the pewter medal for the second season in a row. Their "Showgirls" program was highlighted by level four calls on their twizzle, synchronized spin, traveling, and intersection elements and strong grades of execution on their group lift, pivot block, and traveling elements. Despite some errors in their intersection elements, the team was able to secure a season's best score by over eight points.
Collegiate will also next compete at the Tri-State Synchronized Skating Competition on Saturday, February 7, before their season concludes at the National Championships held in Salt Lake City, Utah beginning on Wednesday, March 4.
The Senior team took the ice for their free skate on Saturday night after an electric short program on Friday night. The team was able to secure a season's best score of 56.31 with their short program, over nine points higher than their previous scores this season. The Thunder skated a strong short program, highlighted by impressive grades of execution on all of their elements, adding over four points to their base value. Despite leaving some points on the table technically, they were able to see a small increase in their program component score.
The team's free skate performance also delivered the season's best score, earning 100.18 for a combined score of 156.49. Trine saw an increased program components score in their free skate, despite a fall in their no hold element. The team left important technical points on the table with their pairs, twizzle, pivot block, and moves elements. Despite losing technical points, the team was awarded with strong grades of execution, adding over four points to their base value.
The Senior team will also conclude their season at the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships held in Salt Lake City, Utah.
