Grizzlies and Gorloks Fall to Thunder

FRANKLIN, Ind. – The Trine University women's tennis team picked up two wins today, both in matches hosted by Franklin College. This morning they defeated their hosts 6-1 before taking down Webster University 7-0.

The team opened the day with three wins in the doubles portion of the contest against the Grizzlies. The team of Emilee Bassett and Emma Beehler at No. 2 and Haley Straub and Lizzie Welker at No. 3 each won their matches 6-1. In a much closer match, Elina Locane and Alexis Maloney took the No. 1 contest 7-5.

Maloney had the most convincing win in the singles portion of the dual, taking the No. 4 match in straight games. Molly Hess came up with the No. 6 match, giving up just one game with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Beehler at No. 2 and Bassett at No. 3 each gave up just two games in their wins while Locane took the No. 1 match 6-1, 6-2.

The team went on to sweep the Gorloks in their second match of the day. Bassett and Beehler had the most convincing win of the doubles portion of the match with a 6-1 win at No. 2. The No. 3 team of Straub and Welker won 6-4. The most intense match was at No. 1 where Locane and Maloney needed a tiebreaker to win 7-6 (9-7).

Both Locane at No. 1 and Bassett at No. 3 won their singles matches with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Maloney also had a convincing win at No. 4 with scores of 6-0, 6-3. Hess won the No. 6 match 6-4, 6-3 and Welker took the No. 5 match 7-5, 6-4. Beehler needed a tiebreaker in the second set to win the No. 2 match 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

The Thunder end the day with an overall record of 3-0. Members of the team will next take the courts when they travel to the Hope College Tournament which is scheduled to begin on Friday, September 13.
