ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team turned up for the second half of their senior night match to come away with a lopsided 5-1 victory over visiting Saint Mary's College.
The first half of the contest saw the Thunder struggle to find their rhythm on the artificial turf of the Shive Field in Zollner Stadium. The visiting Belles took advantage of a corner kick opportunity in the 21st minute of the contest scoring the first goal of the match.
The two teams would go scoreless the rest of the half and Saint Mary's took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Everything changed from there as the Thunder stormed out of the intermission. They scored their first goal of the period in the 55th minute. After a flurry of activity in the offensive end senior Morgan Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) placed a header shot on goal that was turned aside by the goalkeeper. The rebound came right back to her and she was able to scoot a pass to freshman Paige Schiebel (St. Charles, Minn. / St. Charles) who put a shot into the empty left side of the net for the goal.
Just 22 seconds later Morgan Sanderson created another opportunity by weaving through three defenders before being forced to pass the ball to a waiting Veronica Ocampo (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Memorial) who put a shot into the bottom left corner of the net. The goal gave the Thunder the 2-1 lead.
Sanderson finally picked up a goal of her own in the 58th minute of the contest when she headed a pass from Sheibel into the bottom right corner of the net.
Sanderson finishes her career owning records for both goals (22) and points (52) for Trine since it joined NCAA Division III. With her two assists in this game, she also ends second with eight assists in her career.
The Thunder continued their scoring in the 80th minute when freshman Andrea Wright (Plainfield, Ind. / Plainfield) came away with a goal with senior Madison Marsh (Coldwater, Mich. / Coldwater) adding an assist.
Three minutes later Trine finished off the scoring in the match. Senior Marisa Robinett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) took a corn opportunity for the team and placed the ball perfectly. Junior Courtney Reece (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) took full advantage, heading the ball into the net for the goal and giving Trine the 5-1 lead.
The assist is the eleventh of Robinett's career which is the record for the program since it joined NCAA Division III.
