GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Trine University women's soccer team battled their way back after trailing at halftime to come away with a 2-2 draw with host Calvin University, earning the Thunder their second point of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) season.
Despite ultimately trailing at halftime, Trine struck first in the contest. In just the fifth minute of the contest the team made the most of a corner attempt to take the 1-0 lead. Senior Marisa Robinett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) took the corner attempt and junior Courtney Reece (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) finished off the play scoring her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Six minutes later the Knights equalized the contest with a goal of their own. They went on to take their first lead of the contest in the 41st minute of play and would take the 2-1 score into the intermission.
It took the Thunder some time but they came up with an equalizer of their own in with 25 minutes remaining in regulation. This time senior Madison Sanderson (Leo, Ind. / Leo) passed the ball to freshman Paige Schiebel (St. Charles, Minn. / St. Charles) who came up with her first goal of the season.
Trine forced a last-second save from the Calvin keeper but the two teams remained scoreless for the rest of the second half, heading to overtime tied at 2-2.
The Knights dominated the shots column during the first overtime period coming up with three, two of which sailed over the crossbar, the third was turned aside by a Thunder defender. The second overtime unfolded in the opposite way with Trine coming away with three shots including one that forced a save from the opposition.
Ultimately both defenses held firm and the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.
Trine freshman goalkeeper Carmen Sweigard (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) played the full 110 minutes in net for the team. She finished the match with seven saves despite giving up the two goals.
The Thunder come away from the match with a 3-7-3 overall record with a 0-4-2 tally in MIAA play. They will continue their season when they travel to Adrian College on Saturday, Oct. 26 for another MIAA match. The contest is set to start at noon.
