ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Trine University women's soccer team struck first but ultimately fell to visiting Heidelberg University by the score of 3-1.
The Thunder wasted little time scoring their first goal of the season on home turf. Following an offensive push ended with the ball rolling out of bounds, Trine was awarded a corner kick. Senior Marisa Robinett (Auburn, Ind. / DeKalb) took the kick and placed it well inside the box. Junior Courtney Reece (Indianapolis, Ind. / Roncalli) fought her way free of the scrum and put the ball past the Student Princes' goalkeeper.
The score would remain unchanged through the rest of the first half and Trine would enter the intermission with the 1-0 lead.
Heidelberg came out in the second half firing on all cylinders and the Thunder were unable to stop them. The Student Princes tied the contest at one in just the third minute of the period and then took the lead in the fourth.
Trine had an opportunity to tie the game again in the 73rd minute of the contest when freshman Grace Meara (St. Louis, Mo. / Lindbergh) received a cross on the left side of the goal. Her shot would go just wide of the left post.
Heidelberg put the contest out of reach in the final minute of play when they scored their third goal of the contest.
The Thunder fall to 2-3-1 overall following the loss. They will continue their season on Tuesday, Sept. 24 when they host Manchester University for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
