ALMA, MICH. -- For the second game in a row, the Trine University men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout. This time, against Alma (Mich.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup in Alma, Mich.
Trine (5-2-3, 3-2-2 MIAA) outshot Alma (0-8-3, 0-5-2 MIAA), 20-13, with six of those shots being on net, but only needed to get one past the Scot netminder which was done by freshman Jonathan Slone (Troy, Ohio/Troy Christian) just before the end of the first half at the 39:01 minute mark. Fellow freshman Steven Bentley (Howell, Mich./Hartland) set up the Slone goal to earn his first assist of the season. The goal turned out to be the lone point of the first period as the Thunder led, 1-0, at the break.
In the second half, Alma recorded eight of its 13 shots with two being on net. Trine freshman goalkeeper Connor Werschem (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport) stopped both attempts preserving the one-goal advantage and sealed the victory.
Werschem played all 90 minutes in goal for the Thunder, making two saves and claimed back-to-back shutouts.
Trine will look to keep its momentum going when it travels to No. 2 nationally-ranked, and undefeated, Calvin (Mich.) College on Saturday, Oct. 7. The two teams will square off at 7 p.m. in Grand Rapids, Mich.
