ANGOLA, IND. -- Trine University junior basketball player Langston Johnson (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) scored a season-high 20 points, but it would come in a 67-58 loss against non-conference opponent Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University at the MTI Center.
Langston was the lone Thunder player to score in double figures against the Yellow Jackets with his 20 points on seven-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent), including three-of-four (75.0 percent) from the three-point line. He also finished among the team leaders in rebounds with four. Fellow junior Maurice Hunter (Monroe, Mich./Monroe) was second in scoring with nine points and was followed by senior Ellis Cummings (Ottawa Hills, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) with eight points.
Senior Miles Copeland (Perrysburg, Ohio/Toledo St. John's) was the team's leading rebounder with six boards.
Trine (5-2) scored the first points of the game on back-to-back jumpers by Johnson and Copeland. The Thunder maintained a four-point edge, 9-5, at the 16:02 mark following a triple by Johnson when Baldwin Wallace (5-4) went on a 14-4 scoring run to claim a six-point margin, 19-13, with 10:03 left to go in the first half.
Trine went on to rally and regain the lead as the two teams swapped control of the scoreboard a total of five times in the final 10 minutes. A pair of free-throws by Copeland gave the Thunder their final lead of the period, but an ensuing 13-4 BW run that ended the scoring, resulted in the Yellow Jackets having a seven-point advantage at the break, 32-25.
BW netted the first points of the second half to increase the margin to nine points, 34-25, but Trine then began to rally and chipped its way back into the game with a 12-4 run that was sparked by a jumper by Hunter. The run resulted in the Thunder pulling to within a point, 38-37, at the 16:19 mark. The Yellow Jackets later created a little breathing room and extended their lead out to six points and led, 47-41, before Trine rallied again with a streak of eight straight points that included another three-pointer by Johnson, and gave the Thunder a 49-47 lead with 9:35 to go.
The two teams continued the seesaw battle with neither team leading by more than three points until the 5:33 mark. Trine led by a point, 55-54, when BW scored seven unanswered points to move back ahead with a six-point lead, 61-55, with just over three minutes to play.
The 7-0 run put the Yellow Jackets out in front for good and later equalled their largest lead of the game of nine points with the final score of 67-58.
Trine will next host the annual St. Andrews Products Classic this Friday-Saturday, Dec. 21-22 at the MTI Center. The Thunder will face Spalding (Ky.) University in their first game of the two-day event on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m.
