Men's Hockey Battles to 4-4 Tie with Saints

ANGOLA, IND -- The Trine men's NCAA hockey team came away with their second tie of the season in a 4-4 thriller against the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.).

While the Saints would strike first in the game, the Thunder would come out of the first period with a 2-1 lead. Their first goal of the game came from freshman forward Corey Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.), when he collected a rebounded puck and put it past the goalie. Freshman forward Alex Johanson (Skokie, Ill.) and senior forward Lucas Bombardier (Pittsford, Vt.) both recorded assists on the goal.

In the ninth minute of the first stanza, the Thunder would strike again. This time freshman blueliner Chirs Garrity (Stafford, Va.) would score his first goal of the season with a bullet from the point. Once again two skaters recorded assists on the power play goal, sophomore forward Tanner Bennett (Columbus, Ind.) and freshman forward Niko Moulakelis (Prairie View, Ill.)

The lone goal of the second period would come from St. Scholastica's Nate Pionk, one of two he would tally in the match. The goal tied the match at two and that score would hold until the beginning of the third period.

The final stanza of the contest was it's most exciting, featuring four goals two coming in the final five minute of the period. The Saints took the lead for the second time in the contest with a goal in the third minute of the period.

The Thunder would respond with the equalizer in the fifth minute. Freshman forward Cole Lussier (Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.) tallied that goal, his first of the season. Freshmen forwards Niko Moulakelis (Prairie View, Ill.) and Michael Meisenbacher (Basking Ridge, N.J.) would both add assists on the goal.

Trine would pull ahead in the 16th minute of the period with a powerplay score from freshman forward Corey Robertson, who for the second time in the game finished off another player's shot. This time Robertson deflected a shot from the point made by freshman defender Blake Robertson (South Lyon, Mich.) into the goal. Junior forward Jackson Tucker (Mathews, N.C.) would tally his second assist of the season on the goal as well.

The Saints would tally the equalizer in the final minute of the game, with their goalie pulled for the extra skater. Both teams' goalies would come up big in the overtime period and the game would conclude in a 4-4 tie.

The Thunder will take to the ice for the final time in 2017 in two weeks when they take on Chatham University in a pair of games on Friday, Dec. 15 and Saturday, Dec. 16.
